Our Story

Emily Smith started as a solo doula provider in 2009. As she worked with clients she knew that a network of doula providers offering a variety of experiences and services would increase the quality and sustainability of on-call care to families.

In 2015, Emily co-launched Doulas of Capitol Hill and was joined in 2021 by co-owner Jacquelin Knighton. Jacquelin had worked as a doula with Doulas of Capitol Hill and co-launched their sister company Doulas of Prince George’s County.

Today, Doulas of Capitol Hill is a concierge agency that

  • Supports pregnant and new parents in the Washington DC metro area

  • Offers a collaborative care model with healthcare professionals in and out of the hospital,

  • Provides continuity of care with a primary doula

  • Showcases a menu of necessary services available, from lactation to postpartum care, to affiliate relationships with community partners.

Doulas of Capitol Hill is proud to offer birth professionals a support team, a living wage, equitable access for new professionals, and a mentorship community with shared values of providing inclusive and anti-racist care.

SELECTING YOUR DOULA

We always say there's no right or wrong time to choose a doula. Choosing a doula earlier in your pregnancy offers you a greater selection and more time to build a relationship with your doula. But, it is never “too late.” Doulas of Capitol Hill can support you with our services from pre-conception through the baby’s first year.

There are four ways for you to choose the right doula support for your family:

"Late nights feeding the baby are always made nicer by knowing she'll be keeping me company. Our baby also loves Rose, he lights up whenever she arrives and greets him."

— Rachel
