Book Review: Eating for Pregnancy- Your Essential Month-by-Month Nutrition Guide and Cookbook

By Emily Smith, birth doula, postpartum doula, childbirth educator, placenta encapsulation specialist

Eating for Pregnancy by Catherine Jones and Rose Ann Hudson, RD, LD with Teresa Knight, MD, OB-GYN, is a comprehensive guide for anyone who is pregnant or even thinking of becoming pregnant!  Whether you’re looking for information on nutrient rich foods, recipes, meal planning, and even dining out smart, this book has it all!

When people are having a baby they are at a time when they are the most motivated to make healthy food choices.  However, as a pregnant person, we may know what is unhealthy but need some direction on how to make nutritious meals for our growing body and baby, and how that changes month-by-month.

As a doula for 11 years, I recommend this book for doulas and birth workers, as well as parents!

A doula will often have a client who comes to us with questions.  Maybe they are dealing with a high risk pregnancy from gestational diabetes or other high-risk situations. We can encourage our clients to have conversations with their doctors to have a healthier pregnancy and birth with the recipe variations that include vegan and vegetarian recipes as well as gluten free options.

There are so many favorite recipes in this book but one I liked the most was the Roasted Brussels  Sprouts..  We also shared a similar Brussels Sprouts recipe in our Healthy for the Holiday series.

So, if you have questions about what foods to avoid, food aversions and cravings, and how to give the most to your baby’s developing cells, be sure to include Eating for Pregnancy in your by-the-bed stack of books!
