Halloween DIY Feminist Leader Costumes

By Ashley Woolsey

Halloween is just around the corner but it’s not too late for a little DIY. And you know what else is just around the corner? Washington DC. Being Doulas of Capitol Hill we thought it might be fun and appropriate to combine Halloween with politics. Specifically we wanted to create some adorable baby feminists. We chose some of today's most impactful leaders and linked you to costumes pieces to pull it all together. A Special thanks to all of the families that let us dress up their little ones and to Anna Isaiko Photography for taking the most adorable images of our tiny feminists!

“Every girl, no matter where she lives, deserves the opportunity to develop the promise inside of her.” - Michelle Obama

Have your little one dress up like powerhouse and First Lady, Michelle Obama. Based on her iconic portrait by Amy Sherald (the first black woman to commission a presidential portrait), recreate this look by simply adding some paint to a simple white dress. If you're feeling like you want to add something extra, how about cutting out a picture frame from some cardboard and putting it around the stroller while you walk around.

“Fight for the things that you care about, but do it in a way that will lead others to join you.”

- Ruth Bader Ginsburg

The second of four female justices to be appointed to the Supreme Court. Your tiny feminist can stand up for women’s rights and gender equality with a basic black onesie and lace collar. Don’t forget to add a gavel for banging (or chewing on) and a little pair of glasses so she can read those new laws she’s putting into place!

“Since our leaders are behaving like children, we will have to take the responsibility they should have taken long ago.” - Greta Thurnberg

This Swidish activist is climate change's worst nightmare. She’s also proof that your size and your age mean nothing when it comes to standing up and fighting for what you believe in. Have your baby take on environmental activism too with Greta’s signature braids and little yellow raincoat. Don’t forget your sign! “Skolstrejk för klimatet"

“Change takes courage.”

-Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Not all heroes wear capes, but Alexandria Ocasio Cortez does! As the youngest woman to ever serve in the US Congress, AOC isn’t afraid to speak her mind and call out a broken system. Pay homage to her fearlessness and her iconic white cape suit that she wore to the State of the Union. Don’t forget her hoops and try adding some pins for causes that she feels passionately about, like keeping families together and the green new deal.

“We have an obligation to take care of the people who fight for us.” – Bernie Sanders

You don’t have to be a woman to be a feminist. Bernie Sanders has been fighting for gender and racial equality long before he was even elected into office. Get his signature crazy hair and laid back outfit to show he doesn’t care about appearances, he’s too busy fighting for a better world. Try adding “Babies for Bernie” to the onesie for something a little extra.
